Maya is a blockchain researcher in the Applied Research team at Intuit. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science, with a focus on cryptocurrencies, blockchains, and DeFi, as well as an M.Sc in Probability Theory and Combinatorics and a B.Sc in Mathematics. Maya’s research focuses on the security and privacy aspects of cryptocurrencies and blockchains, particularly in the areas of decentralized finance (DeFi) and governance.
The blockchain, in addition to being the backbone of many cryptocurrency systems, is an open-access database that records all transactions ever taken place. This makes it an abundant source of data. Currently, the Ethereum blockchain size is ~14TB, with a market cap of over 300B USD. Over 30% of the trade volume on the Ethereum blockchain is attributed to Decentralized Finance (DeFi), which is an umbrella term for financial instruments implemented on top of the blockchain as smart contracts. By leveraging blockchain data, researchers have the ability to derive actionable insights into design vulnerabilities present in certain DeFi platforms.
In this talk, I will present findings from my research that illuminate previously unexplored vulnerabilities in DeFi platforms. Moreover, I will showcase concrete proof of these vulnerabilities happening in the wild, emphasizing the necessity of data-driven approaches in uncovering and addressing such issues to improve the reliability and security of DeFi ecosystems.
